Drop 004 of 100

Cigarette ASMR, a smoking simulator you play in a browser

The ritual, without the tar. It is free, it runs in a browser, and the sound is the whole thing.

Drop 004 of the 100 Cigarettes Project is not an object you buy. It is a first-person smoking simulator you open in a browser, built as an ASMR piece rather than a game. There is no score to chase, nothing to install and nothing to pay.

What you actually do

You drag a painted cigarette up to your lips and hold it there for a pull. The ember flares, the smoke curls, and the ash grows as it burns. The ash stays where it is until you flick the tip, and then it falls.

Burn it down to the nub, grind it out in the tray and the hand leaves the frame. Take a fresh one from the pack, pick up the lighter and hold the flame on the tip. It takes a couple of strikes and a steady hand, the way it does outdoors in wind.

Four rooms

A New York fire escape at midnight, with traffic somewhere below. A 1970s bowling alley with pins falling in the next lane. A Paris cafe on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in the afternoon, where you can also drink the coffee. A Manhattan dressing room with a lit mirror and a martini.

Each room is painted art, and every object you touch is a piece of that painting rather than an overlay drawn on top of it.

Why the sound matters

The sound is not decoration, it is the product. The crackle of the pull, the exhale, the flick, the flint, the grind in the tray. It is real recorded audio, and the ambience in each room is a real recording of that kind of place.

Turn it on. The first time you touch the screen the audio starts by itself, because a silent version of this is pointless.

Smoke one

Who it is for

People who quit and miss the ritual rather than the nicotine, and people who like ASMR objects that are made rather than generated. There is nothing to buy here and nothing is being sold to you.

Where this sits in the project

100 Cigarettes is an art project of exactly one hundred numbered drops, ending permanently after Drop 100. Most drops are priced by a rule that is part of the work: Drop 001 gets more expensive with every sale, Drop 002 is priced to Bitcoin. Drop 004's rule is that it costs nothing at all.
